Acupuncture Q & A

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture originated in Asia over 3,000 years ago. It’s a time-honored therapy based on the insertion of tiny needles to treat a range of conditions. Acupuncture is a safe and effective natural therapy and an increasingly popular form of health care that is used by a wide range of cultural and social backgrounds.

The insertion of very thin, flexible needles into specific points in the skin promotes blood circulation to targeted areas. This, in turn, activates your body’s immune and nervous systems, reducing inflammation and releasing endorphins to alleviate pain and other conditions.

Common conditions treated with acupuncture are:

  • Chronic Illness
  • Depression/anxiety
  • Infections/colds/flu
  • Digestive problems/eating disorders
  • Chronic fatigue/low energy
  • Gynecological complaints
  • Injuries
  • Infertility/prenatal care
  • Insomnia
  • Musculoskeletal pain/arthritis
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Neurologic pain (sciatica, migraines, neuropathy)

And more...

What are the benefits of acupuncture?

  • Reduces pain
  • Treats arthritis
  • Relieves migraines

How can my treatment plan be customized to fit my needs?

At Family Wellness Acupuncture, we may use any combination of acupuncture treatment therapies during your treatment sessions that may best help you get better:

Moxibustion

This treatment uses an herb called mugwort. It may be burned on the handle of the needle, above the skin, on salt or on a slice of ginger. This is used to "warm" acupuncture points to quicken the healing process. Moxibustion is also commonly done with warming pads by many acupuncturists.

Electric stimulation

Also referred to as electro-stim, the is a technique where a low-level electrical current is applied to the acupuncture needles located at various points on the body. This is done to further stimulate the body's qi and healing processes.

Cupping

This is a therapy used for sore muscles, tension, neck pain, and the common cold. In this therapy, Family Wellness Acupuncture will place small glass or plastic "cups" over specific areas on your body. A vacuum is created under the cup using heat or suction. The team may move the cup over an affected area or leave it in place. You may leave the office looking as though a large octopus gave you a big hug. There is no need for alarm. The slight redness will dissipate.

Herbal medicine

Herbal remedies have been around for centuries and long before modern medicine. They are used to heal illness and address psychological concerns. Herbal medicine can treat conditions such as asthma, eczema, premenstrual syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, migraine, menopausal symptoms, chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, and more.

Eating disorder therapy

Overeating, undereating, anorexia, bulimia are all tough conditions to treat. Using acupuncture, Family Wellness Acupuncture evaluates your condition at every visit and works toward achieving goals that ultimately help you recover and stay in good health.

What can I expect during an acupuncture treatment session?

Treatment sessions can last up to 45 minutes. Sessions typically begin with a discussion of your health status and progress. Afterward, needles may be inserted to begin your treatment.

Expect to relax for up to 30 minutes while the needles stimulate your natural healing process. Following this, another series of points may be selected to complete your treatment as you continue to relax.
