Acupuncture Explained

You have a friend who was dealing with crippling anxiety and finally found relief through acupuncture. Or, perhaps you read about someone who was able to relieve chronic back pain through acupuncture. However you came to hear about the potential of acupuncture, you want to know more.
Here at Family Wellness Acupuncture, our team specializes in this ancient form of healing and, as our clients can tell you, we’re able to help with a wide range of issues, from stress to arthritis.
In this blog, we take a look at how acupuncture works, what it can be used to treat, and what you can expect during your sessions with us.
Going with the flow
The human body is incredibly powerful and self-sufficient, which means that we have the resources within us to heal, repair, and maintain good physical and mental wellbeing. These resources rely on the right flow of energy, or qi, through your body and when this flow is interrupted, so, too, are your body’s resources.
Through acupuncture, which has been practiced for millennia, our goal is to target points along the pathways of your qi to restore the right flow of energy. There, acupuncture points are arranged along meridians (the pathways we referenced), and we access them using hair-thin needles that stimulate and unblock the pressure point.
There are hundreds of acupuncture points in the human body, and each is associated with certain areas of your physical and mental health.
Areas of your health that can benefit from acupuncture
Though we feel that acupuncture can certainly benefit most areas of your physical and mental health, we focus on certain areas, including:
- Stress
- Chronic pain and pain management
- Anxiety
- Migraines
- Fertility
- Pregnancy
- Neck pain
- Gastrointestinal issues
- Weight loss
To give you an idea of how effective acupuncture can be, one report found, “There is good scientific evidence encouraging acupuncture therapy to treat anxiety disorders as it yields effective outcomes, with fewer side effects than conventional treatment.”
Another report published in The Journal of Pain found that, “Acupuncture has a clinically relevant effect on chronic pain that persists over time.”
Though acupuncture is proven for treating existing problems, it's also an effective technique for preventive practices, such as anti-aging.
Undergoing acupuncture
When you undergo acupuncture, we first review your symptoms and then decide which points might be blocked, and we work toward rebalancing the flow of energy in your body by accessing those points.
We understand that the thought of needles may give you pause, but we assure you that the needles are extremely thin, and most patients feel nothing at all when we insert them. In fact, many of our clients find acupuncture to be soothing and spend the time in deep relaxation and meditation.
In most cases, you benefit from a series of acupuncture treatments, though it’s impossible to say here how many you might need as it depends upon your wellness goals.
