Acupuncture and Your Fertility

Acupuncture and Your Fertility

When it comes to fertility issues, the problem can have many sources, and they’re almost equally divided among males and females. In fact, of the men and women of reproductive age in the United States who are struggling with infertility, one-third of the time the problem lies with the man, one-third with the women, and the final third with either both or for reasons unknown.

In many cases, no matter where the fertility problem lies, the team of certified and licensed acupuncturists here at Family Wellness Acupuncture can help.

Please note that when we refer to acupuncture in the following, we also include our use of fertility-enhancing herbs.

Acupuncture and your metabolic health

Acupuncture has been used for centuries to help improve fertility as the practice works to stimulate your metabolic system, or hormones. Many hormones contribute to your ability to conceive, including the reproductive hormones in both men and women, as well as your thyroid hormones.

As a result of directly stimulating your metabolic systems through acupuncture, we’ve had great success in treating the following issues:

Although these are readily identifiable causes of infertility, acupuncture can also help with idiopathic (unexplained) infertility and repeated pregnancy loss issues.

The benefits of acupuncture outside of hormones

Though hormones play a direct role in your ability to conceive, the therapy delivers many additional benefits that may help you overcome fertility issues.

For example, through acupuncture, we can improve the blood flow in the uterus, which can help improve your chances of a successful pregnancy.

As well, stress often plays a role in fertility and, through acupuncture, we can help your body achieve a far more relaxed state, which improves almost every area of your health, including your ability to conceive.

Acupuncture and fertility treatments

If you’re turning to in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI) to overcome your fertility issues, acupuncture can be incredibly helpful. With acupuncture, we ‘re able to boost and reinforce the hormonal treatments you’re receiving, at the same time as we improve your overall reproductive health.

In most cases, we recommend that you begin your acupuncture treatments about three to four months before your planned insemination date for best results.

Your acupuncture timeline

If you and your partner are encountering fertility issues, we recommend that you both come see us one to two times a week for up to six months. Of course, should the happy news come during this time, your timeline will be much shorter!
